The Genesis GV90 vs. the competition
2028 Genesis GV90 vs. Cadillac Escalade IQ, Lucid Gravity, Volvo EX90 and Rivian R1S
The arrival of the 2028 Genesis GV90 gives luxury SUV shoppers another compelling choice in the rapidly expanding market for three-row electric SUVs. As Genesis’ new flagship SUV, the GV90 combines three-row versatility with an emphasis on premium materials, passenger comfort, technology and distinctive Korean-inspired design.
But how does the GV90 compare with other premium electric SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Lucid Gravity, Volvo EX90 and Rivian R1S?
While all five vehicles offer electric power and available three-row seating, each takes a different approach to luxury, performance, technology, space and everyday usability.
Genesis GV90: A New Flagship for Genesis
The GV90 represents the highest expression of Genesis luxury and is designed to bring the brand into the full-size flagship SUV segment.
Genesis describes the GV90 as an all-electric luxury SUV focused on spaciousness, refined materials, advanced technology and what the company calls “Genesis hospitality.”
The U.S. Genesis site currently lists the GV90 as a 2028 model arriving in early 2027. The vehicle measures approximately 208.1 inches long, with a 127.8-inch wheelbase, and uses a 123.5-kWh battery. Genesis lists front and rear electric motors producing up to approximately 657 horsepower combined, depending on configuration.
Inside, the GV90 is designed to place particular emphasis on passenger comfort. Available features include front massage seats, second-row captain’s chairs, four-zone climate control and a 24.6-inch integrated display. The GV90 Neolun versions add even more distinctive features, including a unique entry design and additional luxury appointments.
Rather than simply making the largest possible SUV, Genesis has focused on creating an upscale, lounge-like environment for passengers.
Cadillac Escalade IQ: Full-Size American Electric Luxury
The Cadillac Escalade IQ approaches the luxury EV segment from the traditional full-size American SUV perspective.
At 224.3 inches long, the Escalade IQ is substantially larger than the GV90. It offers three rows and seating for up to seven passengers, with up to 23.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and up to 119.1 cubic feet behind the first row.
Cadillac estimates up to 465 miles of range for the 2026 Escalade IQ and up to 750 horsepower with Velocity Max. Its 205-kWh battery is considerably larger than the GV90’s 123.5-kWh battery. Cadillac also lists 350-kW DC fast charging, with up to 117 miles of range added in approximately 10 minutes under specified conditions.
The Escalade IQ is therefore particularly relevant to shoppers who want the physical size, road presence and passenger capacity traditionally associated with a full-size Escalade, but with an all-electric powertrain.
Lucid Gravity: Efficiency, Range and Performance
The Lucid Gravity takes a somewhat different approach.
At 198.2 inches long, the Gravity is shorter than both the GV90 and Escalade IQ, but Lucid has designed the vehicle around maximizing interior and cargo space. The company says the Gravity can accommodate up to seven adults and offers up to 120 cubic feet of cargo space depending on configuration.
Range is one of the Gravity’s major talking points. Lucid currently lists an EPA-estimated range of up to 450 miles for the Grand Touring configuration when equipped and configured according to the company’s stated specifications. The Gravity is also available with substantial performance, with Lucid listing up to 1,070 horsepower in the highest-performance GT-S configuration.
The Gravity therefore emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency, long-distance range, performance and interior packaging.
Volvo EX90: Scandinavian Design and Family-Focused Technology
The Volvo EX90 takes a more understated approach to the luxury three-row EV segment.
The EX90 offers seating for up to seven and is available with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. Volvo currently lists up to 305 miles of EPA-estimated range for certain AWD configurations.
The EX90 also uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and Volvo lists DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in as little as 22 minutes under optimal conditions.
Volvo’s approach is centered around minimalist Scandinavian design, passenger comfort, technology and safety. That makes the EX90 a natural consideration for families looking for a premium three-row EV without the imposing size of something like the Escalade IQ.
Rivian R1S: Electric SUV Meets Adventure Vehicle
The Rivian R1S occupies another distinct position in this group.
While the R1S can certainly compete with luxury three-row SUVs on technology, performance and comfort, Rivian places considerably more emphasis on outdoor capability and adventure.
The 2027 R1S is available in Premium, Performance and Quad configurations. Rivian lists up to 410 miles of EPA-estimated range for the R1S Premium with the Long Range option, while the Performance version produces 850 horsepower and can accelerate from 0–60 mph in as little as 2.9 seconds.
The R1S also offers genuine off-road capability, all-wheel drive and up to 14.7 inches of ground clearance in its highest setting. It seats up to seven, and for 2027 Rivian added an available second-row captain’s-chair configuration with a center pass-through.
For shoppers who want an electric SUV that can transition from daily commuting to camping, skiing, trail driving or other outdoor activities, the R1S occupies a distinctive niche.

Which Electric SUV Fits Your Needs?
There is considerable overlap among these five vehicles, but their personalities are different.
The Genesis GV90 is designed around flagship luxury, passenger comfort, distinctive design and the Genesis hospitality experience. Its three-row configuration and premium interior make it particularly relevant to luxury SUV shoppers who want something different from the traditional German, American and Scandinavian approaches to luxury.
The Cadillac Escalade IQ brings the scale and presence of a full-size Escalade to the EV market. Its enormous battery, substantial dimensions and available long-distance range make it particularly relevant to shoppers who want maximum size and road presence.
The Lucid Gravity emphasizes efficiency, range, performance and innovative interior packaging. It is especially interesting for shoppers who place a high priority on electric range and acceleration.
The Volvo EX90 emphasizes Scandinavian simplicity, technology, safety and family-friendly three-row versatility.
The Rivian R1S combines three-row practicality with significant performance and off-road capability, making it particularly suited to drivers whose lifestyle extends beyond paved roads.
The GV90 Brings a New Definition of Genesis Luxury
The GV90 gives Genesis a new entry into a segment that has traditionally been dominated by large gasoline-powered luxury SUVs.
Rather than simply converting an existing SUV to electric power, Genesis has developed the GV90 as a flagship designed around electric architecture, passenger space, advanced technology and a distinctly Genesis interpretation of luxury.
For shoppers considering an Escalade IQ, Lucid Gravity, Volvo EX90 or Rivian R1S, the GV90 adds another option to an increasingly diverse luxury EV market.
And for drivers who are looking for a three-row electric SUV that combines luxury, technology, distinctive design and a highly focused passenger experience, the upcoming GV90 is one of the most significant new vehicles to watch as it arrives in the U.S. market.
